B.Sc. (Biotechnology, Chemistry or Biochemistry & Genetics)
B.Sc. Biotechnology is a 3 year graduate program with Biochemistry and Genetics as combination subjects. Biotechnology is a new emerging field with stupendous possibilities with many different interdisciplinary specialties .The study of biological systems including living cells and cell components combined with technology makes up this course. The study of biotechnology leads to developing effective process in matters that directly have an impact on human life like agriculture, medicine and food industry.
Biochemistry in its broad aspect is the most comprehensive of all the branches of chemistry which includes organic, inorganic and physical chemistry and the extent to which each of these are related to the chemistry of life and animals. Today the central goal of the science of biochemistry is to determine how the collections of inanimate molecules interact with each other to constitute, maintain and perpetuate the living systems.
The third combination is Genetics-science of heredity or genetics involves the study of inheritance of characters and the comparison of differences between them which is variation. Genetic discoveries have had major effects on medicine, diagnosis of genetic disorders, which help in providing secondary treatments. In the modern era the knowledge of genetics not only makes us aware of new dangers but has revolutionized the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, bio-technology, clinical genetics, Immunogenetics, behavioral genetics, pharmacology and many other branches of science.
This program is designed to equip the students with the scientific, engineering and business skills-necessary for pursuing a career in biotechnology, Biochemistry and Genetics. It offers a broad understanding of biological and engineering principles of issues that relate to agriculture, medicine and food industry. The program places a major emphasis on practical work. Some of the subjects covered during the course of study include Atomic Structure, Periodic Classification, Chemical Bonding, Biopolymers, Hydrocarbons, Cycloalkans, Carbonyl Compounds, Reaction Kinetics, Environmental Chemistry, Photochemistry, Identification and separation techniques ,Carboxyl acids, Introduction to Nutrition, Macromolecules, the Endocrine System, Amino acids, Nucleic acids, Lipid Metabolism, Bacterial Cell Culture, Microbial Technology, Mathematical concepts, Oxidation Numbers, Chemical Bonding, Compounds of some non-metals, on –aqueous solvents, Organic and inorganic polymers, Alcohols and thiols, Powder Metallurgy, Amines, Industrial Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Carbohydrates, Enzymes.
Pass in 10+2 / equivalent with Chemistry & Biology
Assignments, presentations, examinations, practical work, and a research project are taken into consideration while assessing the student.
Successful graduates can find opportunities in Pharmaceutical Industries, Food Industry, Business, Dairy Industry, Research Industry, and later pursue their Masters and Research.
