Profile Description    

Prof. Parvathi Chary M.Sc., M.Phil, Ph.D (USA) is presently a Professor at Garden City College Bangalore. She is the Director of R&D, Life Sciences and also the Head of the Dept. of Applied Genetics at GCC. Her life-long passion has always been Research and Teaching. After obtaining an M.Phil Degree from the “Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany”, Madras University, she went to USA in 1981. She pursued her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. Following this she worked in various Institutions in USA, both as a Research Scientist and also as a Teaching Faculty in the Universities there. Some of the Laurels and Honours she won in USA include: a) The Best Teacher Award several times b) The Best Research Presentation several times in USA and c) the honour and privilege of being the very first person to have cloned, sequenced and expressed a gene (Cu/Zn Superoxide-Dismutase from Neurospora crassa), followed by making a null-mutant, in the history of the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has subsequently cloned, sequenced and expressed the enterotoxin gene and also the Mn SOD gene from Salmonella typhimurium d) She has had the honour of obtaining one of the most prestigious Post-Doctoral McLaughlin Fellowships for “Infection and Immunity”, from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, USA. Her illustrious career in Research includes areas ranging from Medicinal Plants, Cancer Research, DNA repair enzymes and Oxidative-Stress. She has had the privilege of publishing more than 45 Original Research Articles in well-known peer-reviewed International and National Journals. After two-decades of service in USA, she moved back to India to serve in her home-land and worked as Faculty Members in Sri Sathya Sai University, Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh., for more than a decade. For the past 2 ½ years, she has had the privilege to work in the Garden City College as the Director for R&D in Life Sciences and has inspired several faculty members and students to pursue Research in various fields of Biotechnology that encompass Botany, Mycology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
